This research explores Thomas Shelby's use of illocutionary acts in Episode 1 of Season 2 of the television series 'Peaky Blinders,' employing Searle's speech act theory as a methodological framework. The analysis identifies a total of 73 illocutionary acts, comprising 31 Representatives (42,47%), 33 Directives (45,21%), 3 Commissive (4,11%), 6 Expressive (8,22%), and 0 Declarations (0%). The predominance of Representatives and Directives underscores Thomas Shelby's role as a commanding and assertive leader, frequently involved in stating facts and giving orders. The absence of Declaratives aligns with his character's pragmatic approach, focusing on influence rather than formal declarations. Additionally, the study finds only 5 instances of indirect speech acts, indicating a strong preference for direct communication. These findings offer valuable insights into Thomas Shelby's speech patterns and suggest avenues for further research, such as examining his communicative behavior across different episodes and seasons, conducting comparative studies with other characters, and applying these insights to enhance scriptwriting and character development in media
